The dreadful beast must be exterminated, the country-side must be freed from this pest, this terror, this destroying scourge. The fact that not even a hen roost was the worse for the dragon’s arrival wasn’t allowed to have anything to do with it. He was a dragon, and he couldn’t deny it, and if he didn’t choose to behave as such that was his own lookout. But in spite of much valiant talk no hero was found willing to take sword and spear and free the suffering village and win deathless fame; and each night’s heated discussion always ended in nothing. Meanwhile the dragon, a happy Bohemian, lolled on the turf, enjoyed the sunsets, told antediluvian anecdotes to the Boy, and polished his old verses while meditating on fresh ones.

Che succede se in un villaggio si scopre all’improvviso che un drago centenario ha scelto di vivere in una caverna abbandonata vicino ai pascoli? Un drago a prima vista non dissimile da tutti gli altri: immenso, con le squame lucide, la coda lunga e un muso pronto a lanciare alte fiamme e ad arrostire tutti ? Almeno sembrerebbe così se non fosse che in realtà quello è un drago filosofo che ha fatto del pensiero e della poesia la sua ragion di vita e che non è minimamente interessato a giovani fanciulle o a capanne da arrostire. Ma un drago è sempre un drago e si sa, la gente ha bisogno di tanto in tanto di una bella caccia grossa, ed ecco quindi arrivare nientepopodimenoché San Giorgio in persona.
la mia opinione su The reluctant dragon di Kenneth Grahame
Questo libro per ragazzi è un classico della letteratura anglosassone e anche la Disney negli anni’40 ne ha tratto un divertentissimo film. La storia è simpatica e il drago protagonista ha un aplomb meraviglioso. La sua amicizia con un giovane pastorello darà adito a lunghe e divertenti discussioni e alla fine trionferanno il quieto vivere unito a un pizzico di furbizia e un paio di boccali di birra appena spillata.
Un racconto delizioso da leggere insieme ai bambini in questi freddi pomeriggi d’autunno.
